Billabong Pro Tahiti 2016 Opening Ceremony
Today the Billabong Pro Tahiti Opening Ceremony was held. Competitors, locals and visitors from all over gathered at the Point just a short boat ride away from Teahupoo.
The ceremony began with local priests blessing the contest site, sharing stories and wishing all involved in the event good luck. Our very own Marketing President, Scott Hargreaves, was invited up to speak on behalf of Billabong. He thanked the locals for their hospitality, the Tahitian Surfing Federation and the WSL for their partnership. WSL President Graham Stapleberg then got up to speak, reemphasizing the appreciation both parties have for the town of Teahupoo and the Tahitian people as a whole. Graham then handed over a proclamation between the Tahiti Nui and Hawaiian ancestors, showing the long standing relationship between the two.
The ceremony ended with local Tahitian dancers performing in front of the crowd. The final dance then incorporated some of the surfers on hand including Mark Occhilupo and Bruno Santos. We now look to the first day of the waiting period tomorrow morning where there's potential for an 8am start.
