Breaking records, making history and the Billabong XXL after party
Friday night at the Billabong XXL Awards big wave riders, pro surfers, and industry attendees met at the Grove in Anaheim to honor the 2012 Billabong XXL Big Wave Award nominees, announce the winners, and recognize the biggest swells and rides of the year.
On the big screen attendees witnessed big wave riders from around the world take on some of the scariest rides of their lives, then take the stage.
Chevy Metal (band members Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett and Wiley Hodgden with special guest and Dave Grohl) performed live at the after party.
Footage (coming soon), photo gallery, and two stand out winners from the Awards Show:
Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara was honored for the 78-foot drop he took on a record breaking at Praia do Norte in Portugal in November. The wave measured by experts is now included in the Guinness World Records.
On August 27, the waves at Teahupoo were too dangerous for the Billabong Pro to run. Instead, a group of the worlds big wave surfers dared to paddled out while the world’s top touring pros took a day off. Watch CODE RED to view the footage.
This day, Nathan Fletcher caught one of the heaviest waves in surfing history, a ride that's the 2012 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards judges named "Ride of the year", "Monster Tube", and "Overall Best Performance"; effectively being the first to ever win three Big Wave Awards in one night.
