SURFERS GET THEIR GROOVE ON AT THE 2012 COSMIC CREEK

Anyone hungering for a bit of 1970s nostalgia should have been at Orange County's Salt Creek beach for the recent Billabong Cosmic Creek surfing event.   More than just a surf contest, over its 12-year history the Cosmic Creek has become a popular family-style weekend experience celebrating the distinctive style and surfboard designs of the 1970s.

This year's Cosmic Creek entertained hundreds of spectators and contestants who made the most of the small swell and intermittent fog.   The competition format is unique as contestants do not bring their own surfboards -- beach heat draws cards for priority and each surfer then selects his weapon of choice from a collection of almost 100 boards lovingly left over from the Seventies.   Alternating heats would pick from either cruisy single fins or more maneuverable twin fin designs, leveling the playing field and testing each surfer's ability to adapt to the different styles of riding.

There were many multi-generational surf families joining the fun, including 1980s-era world champion Tom Curren and his sons Pat and Frank, all of whom made it to the finals in their respective divisions.

Once the trophies had been handed out, a free concert got underway in the grassy park area at Salt Creek.   The fog instantly vanished and both Band of Frequencies and Donavon Frankenreiter made music for the large assembled crowd.

Frankenreiter -- a Salt Creek local known as one of the world's most stylish freesurfers and for his success as a performer and recording artist -- was beyond enthusiastic about the whole groovy Cosmic Creek scene.   Dono put it succinctly: "It's the best surf event in the world, ever."

Billabong's 2012 Cosmic Creek was presented by Subaru, and proceeds from the event were be donated to the OC Parks.   The Cosmic Creek is sponsored by Billabong, Von Zipper, Kustom, Honolua, Clif Bar, Verizon, Sector 9, Contour, Chipotle and Surfer Magazine.
