Josh Moniz Squeaks Out Pipe Pro Junior WIn
A Pipeline win in the final five seconds for Billabong Team Rider, Josh Moniz.
The prestigious Pipe Pro Junior went down in contestable conditions on Saturday with some of the top local and international juniors in surfing doing battle on Oahu's North Shore. The final drew Haleiwa's Benji Brand, Spain's Natxo Gonzales as well as brothers Josh, 18, and Seth Moniz, 17 (2014 Pipe Pro Junior winner). The first wave of the final saw Josh jumping out in front with a near-perfect 9.8 ride, the highest heat score of the event, for a lengthy Backdoor tube. Despite the early jump on his competitors, Josh struggled to back up his high score. With a minute remaining in the final, Benji held the first place spot with Josh in second. In the last five seconds of the heat Josh paddled into a left at Pipe needing around a seven-point ride to surpass Brand. He took off, gained speed, launched and landed a backhand 360 air to earn the score, thus snatching the win away from Benji.
The win came in heroic fashion and Josh was chaired up the beach at Pipeline by brother Seth (who placed fourth) and good friend Benji. A huge congrats to Josh on his win and to brother Seth for the great result as well!
