DIY Playa Picados
Learn how to make a DIY papel picado banner for your summer fiestas!
Nothing makes our hearts melt more than when we see the picados lining the streets making way to the beach. Somehow these paper crafts effortlessly wave in the wind and instantly make us feel a sense of celebration (cue the maracas!).
So naturally, we had to re-create these
traditional Mexican banners because surfing and salty hair is definitely a
social affair and any excuse to celebrate is the only excuse worth making…

Here’s what you’ll need:
- Colored tissue paper
- Exacto knife with blades
- Glue stick
- Cotton string
- Self healing mat
- Tape & stapler (these are helpful!)
1. Print out your template on cardstock if you have it. Using the exacto knife, remove all white area. We suggest starting with the squares.2. Evenly cut your colored tissue paper to fit the picado template (leave room on the borders). To start, staple about 6-8 pieces together on the top. This will help from any shifting while cutting.
3. Place the template on top of the tissue paper and begin to cut just like step 1.
TIP: tape the corners of the template to the tissue paper to help from shifting.
4. Make a strip of glue at the top of the picado and fold over the string. Press down to secure.5. Repeat step 4 until you have a banner full of paper picados
We’ll see you on the PLAYA! Don’t forget to pack those bikinis for your Spring Break festivities.
