Road Trips with Kin Company + DIY Beach Essentials Bag

It’s no surprise we’re lover of all things surf…surfer girls, surfboard, surf break, and yes, surf bags are naturally no exception to our list of loves. When we first caught a glimpse of Kin Company’s prized board bags, we needed a few of these woven treasures for our own…

This last weekend we road-tripped down the coast to San Diego, California! We met up with Megan, the girl behind KIN COMPANY to see what inspires her and take a look at her life behind her sewing machine making surf board bags.

“Sewing has become such a creative outlet for me. I would have fun making pillows, an occasional clothing piece and other little things when I was younger. I made my first board bag back when I was about 19. The passion behind this particular creation is that it is truly a representation of my upbringing. I love the picture that comes to mind when I think of it as what is 'woven with in me'. I grew up getting pushed into waves by my dad and my mom teaching me the art and tricks of the trade of all things sewing. Merging their passions has lead me to making mine… KIN COMPANY.”

Thanks for letting us hang with you, Megan! We had a blast getting to be behind the scenes of this local girls’ craft and are excited to see what becomes of it all in the future!

As a little DIY treat, here's Meg's how to BEACH ESSENTIALS BAG! A perfect drawstring bag to hold your surf wax, sunscreen and of course those seaside sandy treasures you find on the shore. Scroll below and make your own!

DIY BEACH ESSENTIALS BAG:

MATERIALS:

Canvas Fabric

Sewing Pins (30)

Scissors

Rope

2 Grommets: (0.44 inches)

Cut your canvas into 2 pieces; 12 X 11 inches

Pin together inside out your 2 pieces of canvas; this is to help keep the fabric together as you sew.

Sew around 3 sides of your fabric leaving the ‘top’ of your canvas bag open.

Fold over the top of your bag 2 inches.

Mark a dot on the inside and outside of the bag at a ½ in from the fold

A ½ inch from your inside do is where you will make 2 holes for your grommets.

Insert + hammer on grommets over the holes made in the step prior.

Fold your fabric back to the 2” fold you began with. And loop your rope all the way into the fold around the bag, pulling through the string through the grommets.

Fold your fabric back to the 2” fold you began with. And loop your rope all the way into the fold around the bag, pulling through the string through the grommets.

Sew around the hole fold about ¼” away from the edge. It’s okay if it’s not perfect! Remember this is all on the inside of the bag!

*Trick: you can iron under all your edges to get rid of the ‘raw hem’.

Flip your bag right side in, fill with your beach essentials + head to the sea!
